All About Prostate

Size: This is a small, squishy gland size of a Ping-Pong Ball.
Location: Located inside the groin. Between root of penis and rectum. The urethra runs through this gland.
Function: It supplies seminal fluid. The same fluid mixes with sperm and helps the sperm to travel and survive.

So this walnut sized gland on the root of penis, helps in reproduction majorly. But due to many reasons, when its size increases, it leads to the several problems.

Here we are supposed to discuss the most common problem with prostate gland. The Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or commonly known as Prostatomegaly.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

The size of prostate impacts the urinary system. Because this gland is located on the root of the pineal tissue. And this gland gives passage to the urethra too. Therefore all the symptoms of increased size of prostate relates to the flow of urine only.

Severity of the symptoms of enlargement of the prostate varies according to size of the prostate. Because, the increased size of prostate, impacts flow of urine. And also impacts the passage of urethra.

Symptoms of BPH

  • Increased the frequency of urine.

  • Feeling repeat urge to urinate and fullness in the bladder

  • Repetitive infection in urine

  • In severe conditions

The size of your prostate doesn’t necessarily determine the severity of your symptoms. Some men with only slightly enlarged prostates can have significant symptoms, while other men with very enlarged prostates can have only minor urinary symptoms.

Ayurveda About Prostate Enlargement

The first question which comes to mind about any condition is- does Ayurveda talk about Prostate and its enlargement?

Certainly, Ayurveda doesn’t relate to the condition directly. But there is a condition of “Mutraghat”. This condition is described in detail. Mutraghat (मूत्राघात) is a condition of blockage in passage of urine. Under same condition, a condition of “Ashthila” अष्ठीला is described by Sushruta Samhita.

In between the urinary passage and rectum, a gland is located in men. When this gland increases in size, it blocks the passage of the urine, stool. This leads to the distention of the urinary bladder and causes upward movement of the urine.

Sushruta Samhita Chapter 58, Uttar tantra

Sushruta, detailed the location of the gland, accurately. Along with all the symptoms.

Ayurveda Treatment of BPH

The treatment of BPH is never complicated through Ayurveda. And there is no requirement of surgical interventions for this condition. The treatment what we offer at Sukhayu Ayurved is of two types-

Shamana Chikitsa

This is palliative care. Where size of prostate gland is between 26-46 cc. And residual urine volume is not more than 90 cc. The treatment is done with medicines alone. According to Dosha and condition of patient, our Vaidyas make a diagnosis. Therefore the selection of medicines is based on the following things.

  • Prakriti of a patient (Bio Constitution)
  • Pulse of patient and more importantly
  • On the causative factor behind Prostate enlargement.

Shodhana Chikitsa

In cases where size of gland is more than 46 cc and residual volume is more than 90 cc, Panchakarma is mandatory. It becomes important to remove the vitiated doshas. Hence, a patient needs to follow Panchakarma regime.

Because this is a condition of Vata. Therefore Basti treatment is always main part of treatment. We do Uttar Basti or simple Basti in these cases.

Patient of BPH need to admit for 8 days in Sukhayu. So that patient can avail proper treatment.
