The question we ask first is not how. It is why.
Most treatment begins with the symptom. A patient walks in with a joint that has begun to fuse, a hand that has stopped answering the brain, an immune system attacking its own tissue, a spine that will not straighten — and the instinct, theirs and often their previous doctor's, is to go after the symptom. Silence the pain. Suppress the inflammation. Manage the number on the report.
We start somewhere else.
A symptom is not the disease. It is information — the body telling you that something deeper is still not correct. Suppress it and you have not treated anything; you have only turned off the one signal that tells you whether you are winning. So at Sukhayu, across every specialty we work in, we do not chase symptoms. We read them. We treat the disease underneath, and we let the symptom settle as the disease corrects.
This is the difference between relief and treatment. Relief is fast and hollow. Treatment is slower, and it holds.
Cure is divine. Treatment is possible. We are honest about that line, and everything below sits inside it.
What kind of hospital this is
Sukhayu is a NABH-certified Ayurvedic hospital built for chronic disease — the conditions that conventional medicine can often only hold at bay, where a patient has usually already been told there is nothing more to do but manage. Our work sits in three specialties:
- Autoimmune disorders — rheumatoid arthritis, lupus (SLE), psoriatic arthritis, Sjögren's, mixed connective tissue disorder, and other conditions where the immune system turns on the body's own tissue.
- Neurological diseases — multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, paralysis, Parkinson's, stroke rehabilitation, and other disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
- Orthopaedic, spine & joint conditions — ankylosing spondylitis, avascular necrosis, osteoarthritis, gout, scoliosis, slip disc and sciatica, and other conditions of the joints and spine.
Different systems, one way of thinking. What follows is the method we apply to all of them.
We do not sell packages. We treat diagnoses.
There is no "21-day program" here that every patient is fitted into regardless of what is actually wrong with them. That is the commodity model of Ayurveda — a fixed sequence of therapies sold by the day, the same for an autoimmune spine and a slipped disc, because the therapy is the product.
For us the diagnosis is the product. The therapy is chosen to fit it.
Two patients can arrive with the same complaint and leave with entirely different treatment, because the disease underneath is not the same. Radiating leg pain from a mechanically compressed nerve root is a different disease from the same leg pain arising inside an autoimmune spine — we have treated both in a single patient carrying Ankylosing Spondylitis and sciatica at once, and the treatment had to answer each on its own terms. To give them the same "package" would be to treat neither.
So before any oil is warmed, there is a diagnosis. A real one — clinical examination, your imaging, your history, read by an M.D.-level physician. What follows is built for that.
What a diagnosis actually decides
Once we know what the disease is, three questions get answered, and the answers shape everything — whether the case is neurological, autoimmune, or orthopaedic.
Is the cause physiological, or is it mechanical? This distinction governs the entire prognosis. A physiological cause — a dosha imbalance, an inflamed tissue, a disturbed channel, an immune system driving rheumatoid inflammation — responds well to medicine and therapy. A mechanical cause — a nerve root pinched by a bulging disc, a joint that has structurally changed — does not yield to medicine alone. Where the cause is mechanical, the treatment has to change every physiological condition that is preventing the body from doing its own repair, and then let the body do it. The body does the healing. The treatment makes the healing possible.
Is the disease active, or has it settled? An actively inflammatory disease is treated differently from one that has matured and stabilised. This is not a scheduling detail — it changes which therapies help and which would aggravate. It is why Ankylosing Spondylitis, which stays actively inflammatory, is treated differently from a settled mechanical problem, and why an MS relapse phase asks for something different from remission.
How deep does it sit? A superficial problem and one that has struck the deep tissues — the Majja, the nerve and marrow tissue of the joints, spine, and nervous system — are not the same disease even when they resemble one another on the surface. Depth decides the principal treatment.
Only after these are settled do we choose the therapies.
Shodhana and Shamana — why we purify and pacify
Ayurvedic treatment works along two lines, and serious chronic disease usually needs both.
Shodhana (purification) clears what has accumulated — the toxin-laden, inflamed tissue driving the disease, the aggravated Vata behind it. This is the domain of Panchakarma. Not "detox" as a wellness ritual, but the specific, targeted removal of pathology that medicine cannot reach from inside — and never a full standard menu applied to everyone. The procedures are chosen to fit the diagnosis; not every patient needs every therapy.
Shamana (pacification) works on the imbalance itself and on the tissue — rehydrating, nourishing, rebuilding, modulating the immune response, calming the dosha at fault with internal medicines chosen for that patient.
Vata is the only active dosha; the other two depend on it to move. Harmonise Vata and you have reached the whole system. This is why Basti — the medicated enema that is the principal treatment of aggravated Vata — is called half of all treatment, and by some scholars, the whole of it. Across the chronic neurological, autoimmune, and spinal diseases we treat, Basti sits at the centre of most plans.
But Basti alone is not a program. It is one instrument in a plan that is molded to the patient and stays open to change as the patient changes.
An example: how this looks in one disease
The principles above are constant; the instruments change entirely from one disease to the next. To make that concrete, take a mechanical spine problem — a slipped disc pressing on the sciatic nerve. Here the treatment moves along three parallel dimensions at once — Purification, Pacification, and Posture Correction:
- Purification releases the inflamed, rigid musculature clamped around the spine — through Kati Basti, Sarvangadhara, Patrapinda Sweda, and Basti at the core.
- Pacification works on the disc and neural tissue — Tikta Ksheera Basti directed at disc rehydration, Kashaya Dhara for circulation and regeneration, and individualised internal medicines. Reduce the pressure inside the disc and nutrition begins reaching it again by diffusion through the cartilaginous endplates; the disc rehydrates, retracts, and the pressure comes off the nerve root.
- Posture Correction restores the lost spinal curve through customised yogasanas, ergonomic training, and Marma therapy — so the pressure does not simply return. This dimension begins only once the musculature has regained enough flexibility to take it, on the physician's judgment, never on a fixed date; asanas on rigid, inflamed muscle worsen a disc.
That combination is specific to this disease. In an autoimmune joint condition the plan is built around immune modulation and clearing Ama; in a neurological disease it is built around protecting and restoring nerve tissue. Same principles, different instruments. The diagnosis leads, and the treatment follows it.
We treat alongside your medicine, not against it
Ayurveda at Sukhayu is complementary to your conventional care, not a replacement for it — and we will tell you plainly when conventional medicine or surgery is the right path, or the safer one. For neurological and autoimmune patients especially, we work in coordination with your treating specialist, not around them.
We do not force patients off their existing medicines. If you arrive on painkillers, steroids, or immunosuppressants, continue them as prescribed — any decision to reduce or taper any medication belongs to the physician who prescribed it, never to us.
And there are conditions we will not accept, and will refer onward instead — a cauda equina emergency, a complete block in the spinal canal, a severe sequestration compressing the cord or nerve roots, a joint or structure that has been lost completely. We set these limits at the structural level, on what has actually happened inside the body — not on how much pain you are in or how long you have had it. Turning a patient toward the right care is also treatment.
The real test comes later
The honest measure of any treatment is not how you feel walking out of the hospital. It is how you feel six months on, a year on, five years on.
That is why the treatment does not end at discharge. The intensive Panchakarma runs its course in-house; the medicines, the yoga where it applies, and a diet and lifestyle chosen for your constitution and your condition — not generic "eat healthy" advice — carry the work forward at home. Many chronic conditions ask you to return for a further round. Healing that holds is built this way, in layers, over time.
We report our results the only honest way results can be reported — as documented individual cases, not as guarantees. What one patient's body did, yours may or may not do. What we can promise is a real diagnosis, a treatment built for it, and the truth at every step.
Find your condition
The way we treat is always shaped by the diagnosis — so the most useful next step is to read how care works for yours.
- Autoimmune & immunology — rheumatoid arthritis, SLE / lupus, psoriatic arthritis, and Sjögren's syndrome.
- Neurology — multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, Parkinson's, paralysis, and stroke rehabilitation.
- Orthopaedics, spine & joints — ankylosing spondylitis, slip disc, sciatica, and avascular necrosis.
- Not sure where you fit? Browse every condition we treat, or book a consultation and share your reports.
