Ankylosing Spondylitis with Sciatica - Patient Case Study

Patient: 32-Year-Old-Male

Patient Baseline

A 32-year-old IT professional, had been struggling for the last seven years with persistent lower back pain, stiffness, and radiating sciatica that gradually limited his mobility and productivity. The pain worsened with prolonged sitting and standing—common in his profession—and caused heaviness in the lower limbs and severe morning stiffness lasting for hours. His MRI revealed PIVD at L4–L5 and L5–S1 levels, along with HLA-B27 positivity, confirming Ankylosing Spondylitis with Sciatica. Before visiting Sukhayu Ayurved Hospital, Jaipur, the patient was on NSAIDs and biologics, which provided only temporary relief. Concerned about long-term side effects and the progression of stiffness, he opted for a holistic and root-cause approach through Ayurveda.

Panchakarma Protocols

  • Snehana (Oleation Therapy): Internal medicated ghee for 5 days to prepare for detox and lubricate joints.
  • Swedana (Sudation Therapy): Nadi Sweda—localized steam fomentation for relieving stiffness and muscular tension.
  • Kashaya Basti & Taila Basti: Alternating Niruha and Anuvasana Basti to detoxify and nourish spinal structures.
  • Kati Basti: Retention of warm Vatahara Tailam over the lumbosacral region to relieve deep-seated pain and improve blood circulation.
  • Pinda Sweda: Full-body Choorna Pinda Sweda to improve flexibility and muscle tone.
  • Lepana: Herbal anti-inflammatory paste applied locally on the lower back and neck to reduce inflammation.
  • Kayaseka (Herbal Decoction Bath): Whole-body bathing with Dashmool decoction for systemic Vata pacification.

Improvements Observed

  • 90% reduction in pain and stiffness
  • Restored spinal mobility and flexibility
  • No dependency on painkillers or biologics
  • Improved energy, sleep, and mental stability

Treatment Outcome

Patient achieved not only pain reduction but also leading "almost" pain free life. Ankylosing spondylitis and sciatica together can be treated completely with Ayurvedic treatment, when done with proper approach.
