Parkinson's Disease - Patient Case Study

Patient: 69-Year-Old_Male

Patient Baseline

A 69-year-old male, diabetic and hypertensive for more than a decade, had been living a largely stable and independent life until 2021, when he developed severe cervical pain with weakness and slowness in the left upper limb. MRI revealed PIVD at C4–C5, C5–C6, and C6–C7, for which he underwent cervical spine surgery in Germany. Although the pain reduced, his symptoms of slowness, stiffness, and reduced arm movement gradually worsened. Over months, the left lower limb also became slow and rigid. Concerned by the progression, he revisited a neurologist and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. By the time he arrived at Sukhayu Ayurved Hospital, Jaipur in January 2023, he had noticeable difficulty with fine movements, mild speech disturbances, disturbed sleep, and persistent constipation — all classic signs of advancing Parkinson’s disease.

Panchakarma Protocols

  • Kashaya Basti
  • Anuvasana Basti
  • Shirobasti
  • Nasya
  • Udvartana
  • Pizhichil
  • Shali Shashtika Pinda Swedana

Improvements Observed

  • Leading almost normal life
  • No dependency on Levodopa or any allopathic medication
  • Occasional mild slowness only during fatigue
  • Able to travel, perform daily activities independently
  • Emotional stability and confidence greatly improved

Treatment Outcome

Through a structured combination of Basti, Shirobasti, Pizhichil, Nasya, and Shali Shashtika Pinda Swedana, the patient achieved remarkable improvement in motor function, speech, bowel regularity, and sleep quality. Despite his initial complexity — cervical surgery history, left-sided Parkinsonian slowness, and metabolic comorbidities — he regained near-normal functionality and continues to maintain stability without dependency on Levodopa or any allopathic medication. This case demonstrates the strength of classical Panchakarma in modulating Vāta, nourishing Majja Dhātu, and restoring functional independence in Parkinson’s disease.
